Printing refers to the process of transferring graphic and textual information from an original manuscript to a substrate using other methods. Printing is one of the the Four Great Inventions in ancient China. Together with the compass, gunpowder and paper making, it is called the the Four Great Inventions of ancient China.

In 1845, Germany produced the first rapid printing machine, which marked the beginning of the mechanization process of printing technology.  

In 1860, the United States produced the first batch of rotary machines, followed by Germany producing two-color rapid printing machines and rotary printing machines for printing newspapers. By 1900, a six color rotary machine had been manufactured. Since 1845, after about a century, industrialized countries have successively completed the mechanization of the printing industry.  

Since the 1950s, printing technology has continuously adopted the achievements of emerging scientific technologies such as electronic technology, laser technology, information science, and polymer chemistry, entering a modern development stage. In the 1970s, the popularity of photosensitive resin relief plates and PS plates led to the development of printing towards multi-color high-speed direction. In the 1980s, the application of electronic color separation scanners and whole page typesetting systems made the replication of color images digitized and standardized. The continuous improvement of Chinese character information processing and laser typesetting technology brought about fundamental changes in text typesetting technology. In the 1990s, the introduction of color desktop publishing systems indicated the comprehensive entry of computers into the printing field.
